Benton Franklin CASA
How can I help?

Become a Volunteer!

What is the CASA volunteer's role?
A CASA volunteer “speaks up for the child” in court and is often the only consistent person in the child’s life. The CASA will obtain information about the child and her/his current situation by interviewing individuals in the child’s life such as: social workers, medical professionals, counselors, teachers, foster parents, and others. CASAs submit written reports to the judge and attend the child’s court hearings. CASAs monitor the child’s case and ensure that court-ordered services are being provided to the child.

Do I need any special skills?
We welcome volunteers from all cultures, professions, ethnic and educational backgrounds. There are a large number of Spanish speaking parents and children, so we have a need for bilingual volunteers.

Are there eligibility requirements?
Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older. All aspiring volunteers will be carefully screened through criminal background checks, fingerprinting, personal interviews, reference letters, and a written application.

Is there training available for CASA volunteers?
Once a CASA volunteer has been screened, they must successfully complete a three-day training course. This training course provides prospective volunteers with in-depth information about the child welfare system, the court system, CASA volunteer responsibilities, and other relevant topics. Volunteers are supervised every step of the way by CASA staff. Staff is always available to answer questions and provide support to volunteers.

What is the time commitment?
Most CASA volunteers work one case at a time. We ask volunteers to visit with a child at least once per month. Overall volunteers will spend an average of 6 to 10 hours per month on their case, depending on the level of activity. We ask for a minimum one-year commitment, but a typical assignment lasts about one and half years.
